Zelda Classic

This site contains the old version of the ZC website as I left it when I quit AG. I am hosting it here for historical purposes. Most of the external links are broken now, so I removed them and colored the link text a darker shade of yellow. To download old versions of ZC, see the bottom of this page.

Zelda Classic is my magnum opus (so far ;-). I started making the game in April 1999, and shortly thereafter teamed up with "War Lord" from Armageddon Games (AG) going under the name "Phantom Menace". He had a small game 'company' with no major hits, and I had the beginnings of a near-perfect replica of the original Legend of Zelda game with no way to get it publicized.

I continued to do all the game development, and War Lord helped with testing and map design. We finished the first full Legend of Zelda clone, ZC v1.00, by the end of 1999. From there, we kept adding new features, and the game quickly grew from a little pet project of mine into into a phenomenon bigger than we ever could have imagined.

I quit working on the game in July 2000, leaving it at version 1.84. "Dark Nation" continues development on it now. The official site is at www.zeldaclassic.com, which recently got a nice new makeover.

Today Zelda Classic is all over the Web. The ZC community runs several fan sites with custom quest files, forums, etc. The success of the game is due its custom quest capabilities. Most die-hard Zelda fans dreamed for years of designing their own overworlds and dungeons, but Nintendo didn't or couldn't fill that desire. ZC finally gave people the chance to send Link anywhere they could dream of.

For those of you interested in older versions of the game, here are a few offerings. (These are made for DOS, so they only work on Windows 9x/ME.)

NOTE: All of these are unsupported, historical programs. To play current quest files, use the current version of ZC from www.zeldaclassic.com.

This is a remake of ZC v1.00, ported to Win32 by Mottzilla and myself. It runs on Windows 9x/ME/2000/XP. It also includes the ZQuest editor for v1.00. ZQuest was not released until v1.82, and the version here is not very user-friendly...
